Illuminaudio. Yes. That is the one. The best one. It is a heavy album, but not always angry. That is the feeling of the album. The reason it is the best.

What’s your all-time favorite album?

Illuminaudio. Yes. That is the one. The best one.

I did not know the band before. No old singer. No history. Just the sound. The sound became the room. The room was dark and the screen made a soft light on the wall. A good light. We were in the call. The days were long and quiet and we did nothing. A good nothing. The silence when you have said it all but you stay. No one leaves.

The album filled that good quiet. He played it for me. The first song was a space. A door opening. Then the whine into “Caves.” That was the hook. You feel the chorus get big, bigger than the room we were in. Some songs were a fast anger. “Love Is a Cat from Hell.” It burned hot and then it was over. Others WERE not sure. “Stratovolcano Mouth” was a loud thing that grew quiet and then loud again. The storm. The eye. The storm again.

But the song that mattered was the quiet one. “Notes in Constellations.” Before I knew the album, he would sing the melody. To himself. It was just a sound he made. A warm sound in the room. Then he played the album and the song came on. And there it was. The melody. His sound. It was a real song. It all made sense then. The album was not just music anymore. It was our room. Our sound.

It is a heavy album, but not always angry. It is heavy with feeling. A hopeful sadness that fit those long days.

The last song is the one that stays. “Closed Eyes Still Look Forward.” It sounds like the end of the day. The good kind of tired. A little sad, but you know you will be back tomorrow. In the call. Safe. That is the feeling of the album. The reason it is the best.
